Jiang Gu of Mountain Lakes, New Jersey Wins the 2024 McKenney Race

Jiang ended the year with 3,984 masterpoints - here is his story.

Jiang is a trained Statistician who was born and raised in Shanghai, China

He learned to play bridge in high school. After high school graduation, he played in college for four years.

In 1995, Jiang came to US and started his fascinating bridge player journey. Today he is a full-time bridge player.

His Journey:

Gatlinburg is where he set up his goal of trying the top 500 winner.

The Michigan regional was the lucky one – his team scored 62 VP( the average is 60) and won the regional Swiss!

Seaside, OR was when he knew that he was going to won the top 500 for certain and there he made a goal of breaking the all-time masterpoint record.

He and his partner went to the October Fort Myers regional. The whole regional was cancelled one hour before the first event started due to a hurricane. The next day they drove to Miami to fly home as Hurricane Milton approached. 

He broke the record at the Palm Spring and then set a goal of reaching 400 masterpoints, but was disappointed on the last two days at NYC regional when he realized he could not get to 4000 points.

Charleston was his last regional of 2024 and although he did very well, he was out of time.

Jiang has been playing non-stop since late April with 4-5 sessions per day – early morning online virtual club, two sessions NABC/regional/sectional game from 10 to 6, another one or two sessions online game from 7 to 11.

He played in 311 F2F events and 228 online events and won 97 Blue Ribbon qualifiers in 2024.

Regional tournaments: 2,621.52; Sectional tournaments: 201.45, STAC: 52.88; Online Regionals: 115.12; NABCs: 573.87; NABC Robot: 58.27; Face-to-face clubs: 3.05; Virtual Clubs: 357.87 for a total of 3,984.03
